On "Word Verification"

I have just managed to leave a comment on another blog. It took me seven (7) attempt to get the comment posted because the bloggers had chosen to avert spam-comments by activating "Word Verification" on their blog.

As some of you may know my vision is impaired, by congenital hyperopia and by emerging cataracts, making it almost impossible for me to interpret the blurry images of street numbers and intricately interwoven letters and numbers that must be entered to get a comment published.

After my horrible experience today I have decided that bloggers who choose to activate word verification on their blogs will no longer be worthy of my wisdom or wit.

In my own experience Blogger already recognizes 90-95 % of the spam-comments and the few that slip through are easily removed so I cannot really see any valid reason for activating that silly option.

  1. I am sorry to say I am one that just recently started using this option since the Bloggers spam catching feauture lately started letting through way to much spam for me to manually having to delete. I actually got my site temporarely banned from one place because it contained ads for illegal substances in the comments before I had had time to remove them.

    1. Dearest Apmelito, I have always maintained that it is every bloggers inalienable right to do what he wishes with his or her blog. That right also encompasses the right to choose any setting they wish for their blogs.

However, it is also every reader of the blogs choice to decide if they wish to comment or not and under what circumstances.

      Hugs buddy!

    1. Thank you buddy, it will help me immensely!

I have found that it is quite easy to keep an eye on those spam-comments as they go to my Gmail account also. I have made it a habit to read those emails daily I can then spot and remove any comment that has slipped through the Blogger spam filter.

      Hugs buddy!

  3. Three cheers, Bock! Those numbers have always given me problems, too. Nasty lil devils they are :)

  4. I find that spam filters get rid of 90% of the spam anyway (I get around 4 spams a day for links to garbage blogs) and it only takes me a minute or so to filter our the rest.

I gave up word verification a long time ago.

  5. Dear Bock,
A few days ago I unchecked word verification and now everyday spammers try to sell there pharmaceutical stuff on my blog. But when I choose to activate word verification again I would miss your wisdom or wit. ;-)

    1. Awww thanks Christo, and I am really sorry that they are overflowing your blog with comments.

I find that the spam filters get around 90 % of the spammers on my blog, but I guess that the rate can vary between blogs. What I always make sure to do is to mark them as spam so that the filter hopefully catches them the next time and on other blogs.

If you should feel the need to turn it back on please do so, my friend, I will not hold it against you and I will understand perfectly well!
