The European Trade in Horsemeat

More than 60,000 tonnes of horsemeat was traded by European countries in 2012. This data, from the Eurostat internal trade database shows exports of Equidae over the year - that is, 'horse-like' animals, such as horses, donkeys, mules and asses. Roll over the buttons on the left for details of where each country received its equidae from.

While considering how I have been lied to by the manufacturers and traders of meat over the last 20+ years I am on the verge of becoming a vegetarian.

  1. In the U.S.A. the Republicans want to cut funding for such protective agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the FDA, which does a good job all considering protecting the American consumer with its budget of 4 Billion Dollars a year. I am frankly nauseated by the idea of eating a horse burger, and am not surprised by all this --the most disgusting meal I ever had in my life was in Manchester England at a "Mexican" Restaurant which served some disgusting meat in their version of a taco. Lucky for me, the meal did not stay in my body for long now that I think I might have eaten something that was intended for a glue factory.

    1. I believe the EU has something similar set-up, but as usual they probably do not have the clout or resources to investigate these scams.
