Pro-Lifers Coup in the Council of Europe

Health professionals and the hospitals can refuse to perform abortions, according to a new Council resolution.

Ironically this was the
Council of Europes resolution to a Swedish proposal designed to help women in countries with a strong anti-abortion movement to get care. The background is a Polish case where a pregnant woman with intestinal problems, died after doctors refused to perform the necessary surgery because of fear of damaging the fetus.

The vote was held in Strasbourg on Thursday afternoon, when most of the 313 delegates of the Parliamentary Assembly had gone home.

In contrast, the Councils abortion opponents rallied round, and pushed through changes so that the final resolution had the opposite effect: "No person, hospital or institution shall be coerced, held liable or discriminated against in any way for refusing to carry out, facilitate, assist or perform an abortion" or "any act that may cause the death of a human fetus or embryo," reads a couple of formulations.

The resolution was pushed through by 56 votes to 51.

....

I ask myself, "Is healthcare for the patients or for the healthcare professionals?"

Healthcare professionals who have moral qualms about performing such procedures should either be prepared to carry out their work or switch to other areas of healthcare where they can avoid any conflict with their own moral choices.

Healthcare workers have every right to have any objections, reservations or scruples, but it is they themselves who must take responsibility for this not their employers or the patients. There are lots of areas within healthcare where medical personnel do not have to face this moral dilemma.

I finally also ask myself "Where the f**k, were the other 206 well paid parliamentarians and how could they be so naive as to allow this to happen?"

"Los 33"

I am rejoicing with the rest of the world as the rescue of the 33 miners proceeds and also thinking of their fate.

The 32 chilean and 1 bolivian miners were entombed 69 days ago in a mine half a mile under the Atacama desert in Chile. The fortitude and unity of these men has clearly played a key role in their survival.

The miners now have a  new-found celebrity status. It was not surprising therefore to hear that they have received media training classes by videoconference from the surface. Subjects have included how to handle questions about sensitive issues such as money matters, sexual thoughts while underground and of course the squabbling families.

The miners have also been forced to choose the three relatives who will meet them when they finally emerge from the mine. Quite a challenge for men with large and sometimes duelling families "The fighting within the families and the domestic squabbles has actually been our greatest headache," Commander Andreas Llarena, a Chilean navy doctor, told The Sunday Telegraph.

It´s time to meet your loved one´s guys, and all your well kept secrets that have been revealed to the world by the press corps while you were away for 65 days. Just face the music and stand straight, you can do it!

Pride Parade in Belgrade, Serbia, attacked

Pride parade under the motto "Together we can"

Today there was a HBT Pride Parade in Belgrade, Serbia. The parade consisted of  approximately 1 000 persons. To defend the parade against attacks from the amassed homophobes there were 5 000 Serbian police.

As far as it is known the police did a great job and the parade was concluded in an orderly manner. The attacking homophobes (5 000 -10 000 Serbian Nationalists, skin heads, assorted ruffians and other riff raff) are still fighting the police. 90 policemen have been injured so far.

42 Is the Answer! What Was the Question?

Douglas Adams was asked many times during his career why he chose the number 42. Many theories were proposed, but he rejected them all.

On November 3, 1993, he gave an answer on alt.fan.douglas-adams:
"The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought '42 will do'. I typed it out. End of story."

Adams described his choice as "a completely ordinary number, a number not just divisible by two but also six and seven. In fact it's the sort of number that you could without any fear introduce to your parents."
