SecondLife's Got Talent - 2014

I was talking with my dear friend Garth Raleigh, the former Lead of Gay Archipelago and now an esteemed statesman, when he sent me this press release for "GA's Got Talent". It takes place on December 20th 2014 and is one of the events of this years GA WinterFest.

Garth has assured me that the contest is open to all residents of SecondLife (whether or not you live in the Gay Archipelago), hence my choice of title for this post.
GA's Got Talent - The official rules for all contestants
  1. This event is for contestants to get experience with performing and of course to have FUN. And for the audience to see a great show and watch the talented contestants.
  2. Drama and 'cat fights' are not allowed. All contestants are equal and we expect them to play fair (this includes ALL 'People's Choice' audience voting' issues. no exceptions)
  3. Contest management reserves the right to eliminate any contestant(s) not following contest regulations properly at all times

The Application
  • Make a choice what act you want to do at stage. It can be a SOLO or a DUO. Because we expect a big crowd, the second performer can be a duo singer, a dancer or assist with a magical act.
  • For the background of the stage we need a texture or snapshot (landscape format), NOT low pixels. else it looks blurry.
  • Some objects can be rezzed on stage if you are not a pixel size queen. We ask that you avoid heavily-scripted items completely (note - Contest managers will monitor prim usage and take appropriate actions to ensure stable prim counts & scripting behavior during the contest, including immediate return of unauthorized items or heavily scripted items)
  • Please choose a 'stage name' for this performance. Your 'Stage name' can be the artist name or be related to the kind of act you do.
  • Music can be the song you like to perform OR the background music of a magical act. Your music choice should be in MP3 format and will be given to our host DJ to assemble the show stream.
  • Your performance/act should be no longer in time than 5 minutes and 50 seconds
  • There is no theme... so you can be opera singer, rapper, dancer Rudolf Nureyev or Houdini.
  • This contest bears a 'Mature' rating, as does the GA Coronal Estate in general. Contest management reserves the rights to reject any submitted applications for performance that are deemed in poor taste (see "Community Standards' guidelines in Second Life should you have questions.
  • You will need to schedule rehearsal times for your performance well in advance of the final performance. This will be done through the Contest managers so as to allow normal stage operations, maintain fairness of competition and quality of the overall show.
  • COMPLETE AND RETURN the application provided below BEFORE NOVEMBER 20TH, 2014 to Othon Weiland

The prizes
The winner can win L$5000, the first runner up can win L$2500 and the second runner up can win L$1000.
If two or more contestants get the same votes they have to share the money (for instance: 1 and 2 get each 3750 (5000 + 2500).
The prize money is donated by the GA community. The hosting estate will supply the technical equipment.

The voting
A contest board will be rezzed for the people's choice. This will be 1/5 of the total votes.

Four judges with knowledge of fashion/costumes, animations/dancing, performing will watch the show and send their votes to Othon Weiland.

The show
GA's Got Talent will take place on December 20, 2014, as part of the Gay Archipelago WinterFest.

Bock Wins Again - Almost...

The laird celebrates the added funds
Today Swedish blogger Sven Idyll announced the winner of the contest that he has been running on his blog Sven´s(k) Idyll the last week.

The contest was to pick out the common denominator for ten videos presented one at a time.

Video 1 Fool´s Gold med Thin Lizzy. (The singer in the band was Phil (Philip) Lynnot, so we get PHILIP)
Video 2 Walk of Life med Dire Starits. (The singers name is Mark Knopfler, so we get MARK)
Video 3 Thats´s all You Need – The Faces. (Rod Stewart was part of the group during this time and he is the singer in the song. Rod´s real name is Roderish, so we get RODERICK)
Video 4 Online Venting – Rosedale. (Easy, we keep ROSEDALE)
Video 5 Dave Gahan – Kingdom. (Another easy one, we keep KINGDOM)
Video 6 Norah Jones – Humble me. (We keep HUMBLE)
Video 7 Outkast – B.O.B. (We keep BOB)
Video 8 Ulf Lundel – Kom in, Kom in. (We get KOMIN)
Video 9 Riverside – Second Life syndrome.( We keep SECOND LIFE)
Video 10 Ledtråd CEO – White magic. (CEO is the lead here)

We now have Philip, Mark, Roderick, Rosedale, Kingdom, Humble, Bob, Komin, Second Life and CEO, what do they have in common? Mix around a bit and you have four of the CEO´s in a company. The company's product is Second life.

LINDEN LAB is the common denominator and the correct answer.

Sven tells us no one managed to get the correct answer but that Bock McMillan (that's me!) after only six clues had been presented guessed on "Second Life" and is therefore awarded a consolation prize - or as he so kindly calls it encouragement prize - of 250 Lindens.

As planned, the winner will receive L$ 3,000 and will be published on front-cover of Prism. But 2nd, 3rd and 4th best pictures will also receive L$ 1,000 and will be published in Prism. The best pictures received will be published in Prism as well.
For those interested in seeing the photos submitted, please visit:http://www.flickr.com/groups/1698746@N21/pool/   (you will need a Flickr account and join the group)
The pictures we received are wonderful examples of what can be done when the LGBT Community decides to work together, hand in hand. We truly enjoyed reviewing all of the contest submissions, and look forward to seeing more of your creations in the future!
We’re planning a new photo contest very soon and of course you can get ready for the Festival 2012 photo contest.

Thank You Jurors

Sketch of the O J Simpson jury by Bill Robles
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the function that you have performed is one of the least important tasks that you will ever be called upon to fulfill. With the return of your votes, your service in this project is complete.

I know that your efforts with this project has involved sacrifice on your part. I trust you end it knowing that you have made a meaningful contribution to the process and hope that you have enjoyed the experience.

You have been a serious, attentive and extremely diligent jury. It has been my pleasure to have worked with you. On behalf of everyone involved in the project, I thank you each and everyone of you.

I greatly appreciate your willingness to serve and your service. You are now discharged. Thank you very much!

Big hugs and kisses on the cheeks,
Bock

(I confess! I just adjusted the "thanking of the jury" that American judges are instructed to give when a jury is discharged after a trial to suit my purposes and added the kisses and hugs.)
----
Facts about the jury
The jury consisted of 21 persons. (15 women and 6 men, 14 Swedish and 7 Internationals representing Europe, Australia and the North and South Americas).

Considering that I asked 27 persons I was totally overwhelmed by the response and willingness to take part. Only one who was invited declined to take part due to real life emergencies, while five did not respond at all.
