9/11 - The 20th Anniversary

"I had just been released from hospital the day before and was still on sick leave. My father called me on the phone and told me to turn on the TV at once because there was something going on in America. Swedish television was broadcasting live.

Just a few seconds after I had turned on the TV-set - and before I understood what was going on - the television screen showed a passenger airplane flying suspiciously low close to the tower that had been hit first. Then I saw the plane steering right into the second tower, flames erupting around the hole that had been caused in the structure halfway up on the building.

I was baffled, shocked, sad, angry, and frightened. After seeing that I remained in front of the television all that day and well into the night to follow the news. There were many speculations concerning the number of casualties, so once the true numbers were released, I was strangely relieved that they were much lower than the initial speculations.

2,977 people died in the attacks (and 19 hijackers committed murder–suicide), and more than 6,000 others were wounded, it's a scary thought that I could feel relief at such a high toll.

In my mind's timeline there will always be a before or after 9/11, Everything changed, or at least my outlook on everything changed."

(The above has previously been posted in 9/11 - In Memoriam.)

We must also always remember that the terrorists are an extremely small minority in any community, religious group, or society. In the words of the American president Barack Obama, "We don’t differentiate between them and us. It’s just us."

SPIRIT LIGHT DANCE COMPANY PRESENTS

 -:¦:-

10TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW

OCTOBER 4TH, 11TH & 18TH, 2020

12 PM (NOON) SLT

"I can’t believe it!!  Maybe you can’t either!  But the Spirit Light Dance Company (SLDC) is now ten years old!  In another few years, it can qualify for a driver’s license!  What were you doing ten years ago in SL (OK, you don’t have to fess up)?

In honor of its tenth anniversary, SLDC will present a dance retrospective—a greatest hits event, if you will—from selected shows over the years.  The performances will be on October 4, 11, and 18.  Expect to be regaled by dances from classical ballet, Spanish tempos, modern explorations, jazz rhythms, contemporary beats, country music, and of course, everybody’s favorite, Bollywood!!

Why is SLDC still around?  It’s because of a decade of constant study and innovation by SLDC members on how best to unlock the secrets of blending next-generation technology with classic choreography.  Where in the physical world can we so effortlessly perform a dance ensemble in thin air without resorting to imagination (or lots of cables)?  Where can dancers swim with the fishes . . . and breathe with the fishes?  Where can gravity-defying and breathtakingly colorful sets be erected with the click of a switch?   Over the last decade, SLDC has invited us to be guests on voyages through lands in which only the imagination roams.

Why is SLDC still around?  It’s because of the people!  Innovation doesn’t happen without innovators.  Vision doesn’t appear without visionaries.  And building doesn’t get done without builders.  But of primary importance, SLDC is a community—even a family of sorts—in which all members are encouraged to participate and to share in each other’s gifts.  Their artistry is spawned from a collection of individual efforts.

And then there is Caryl, the founder and current Director of SLDC.  Her real-life choreographic experience, her creativity, her energy, and her relentless pursuit of artistic perfection have produced the spark that has kept the company moving.  She is already planning (probably in her usual meticulous detail) the next ten years.

So please come and join us for this special event!  Bring your tapping toes, your sense of wonderment, and for many of you, your memories of what has been at SLDC, and your anticipation of what lies ahead.  Remember, at Rockcliffe University auditorium, 12:00 noon SLT, on October 4, 11, and 18.

See you there!"

On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, at around 2 PM local time, I was in bed and taking a nap. The day before I had returned back home after being in a hospital for a week and receiving five bags of blood. In a routine physical check-up, it was discovered that my blood count was dangerously low.

I was awoken by a telephone call from my father, who told me to turn on the television because "there are things going on in New York". I thought of going back to sleep, but my curiosity got the better of me so I turned on the TV and started watching the eerie live broadcast from New York City where the North Tower of the World Trade Center was burning.

About ten minutes after I started watching the broadcast the events of the picture started to unfold. A plane was seen flying closer and it became clear that it was aiming for the South Tower. It struck the tower at 3:03PM my time, 9:03AM New York Time, and a big ball of fire erupted from the place of impact. Smoke was now billowing from both towers.

I was stunned, like the rest of civilization, by this vehement terrorist attack happening in broad daylight and playing out on color-TV.

I stayed close to the television all through the night. The other attempted attacks were reported. And the numbers of the people killed and wounded rose by the hour.

The final count says 2,996 people were killed (including the 19 hijackers) and more than 6,000 others injured. Additionally, 343 firefighters and 71 law enforcement officers died in the World Trade Center and on the ground in New York City. There were more people killed in places outside New York City.

Life for us, the lucky ones, continued but the world as we know it changed. We lost a kind of innocence that day with the over 3,000 deaths. Little by little, new agencies and lots of regulations and restrictions were put in place to try to prevent similar attacks from ever occurring again.
---

On a day like this, it is good to remember the past, the victims of terror whether killed, mutilated or hurt, and hope and work so that we may never experience anything as horrendous again.

Five Years With Tomais

Today My Tomais and I celebrate our fifth anniversary as a couple. It's really strange to think about it because it doesn't really feel that long, more like a year or maybe two.

Credit for us still being a couple goes to Tomais' legendary patience and his well-controlled temper, not to mention his sweet and loving character and his need of a sometimes blunt companion who is ready to contact anyone to ask for rez-rights.

Still love you to bits, darling, would you please consider continuing with me another year?

SecondLife Turns 15, Let's Celebrate!

SecondLife was launched on June 23rd, 2003 when the adorable Philip Linden, our divine creator, first set foot in this world where Kahvy Smith only existed as an atom that would develop into the first dinosaur. Apmel Goosson wasn't far behind (just a fem nanoseconds) but still came in as first runner-up.

So this year it is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary. Wouldya believe it? It looks so old and mature...

Our darling Ebbe Linden and the Linden Lab har promised that there will be a yearlong celebration. Read all about the improvements at the SecondLife Community blog (url), which include lower mainland costs, the return of last names, improved performance and migration to the Cloud and much much more.

Happy 15th birthday SecondLife!

"It Is Considered A Fashion Faux Pas"

I and the guys visited the one year anniversary celebration of Achille's "Men's Nudist Beach" (a.k.a. MNB or Men's Clothed Beach) yesterday.
Holt, I, Tomais, JJ and Wayne
After awhile I saw something on one of my friends that shook me to the core.

Old men all over the world do it without shame. Germans and Brits do it. Hell, even David Beckham does it! And in the fashion seasons of 2010 and 2014 some designers attempted to make it trendy, but - Thank the Babylonians! - failed. We are talking about wearing socks with sandals.

Now, according to Wikipedia, this is an age old point of contention in men's fashion. "Wearing socks and sandals together is a controversial fashion combination and social phenomenon that is discussed in various countries and cultures. It is considered a fashion faux pas."

So, one of my friends was actually wearing sandals with socks, believe it or not... Surprisingly it was the most fashion forward among us sporting this weird combination, the awesome and well known SecondLife fashion icon, fashion vlogger, film director and producer (link takes you to his YouTube Channel) and not least a brilliant photographer (link to his Flickr), Mr. WayneNZ Esq.
Wayne in socks and sandals
Ladies and gentleman, I am now going to ask you for your opinion, is it the combination of socks and sandals cool or uncool? Please take the poll in the top right corner and add any additional remarks you may have in the comments.

Petr, Older Than Dirt Avatar Celebrates 5th Anniversary

Despite adamant denials and extensive pixel-surgery that has him looking younger than a two year old Petr Hastings-Vanbeek recently admitted to being older than dirt, although still maintaining that he is much younger than the venerable old man Dejerrity Mycron.

Happy Dirt-day, you grumpy young avatar, and may you also have many, many more! And also congratulations to you and Tasty on your fifth anniversary.

The beloved television series Star Trek celebrated it's 50th anniversary yesterday September 8th.

In honor of this celebration, my husband Tomais, who is a nerd, geek and trekkie bundled into one exceptional piece of hunky man, made the picture above with our friends JJ Goodman (in the red outfit) and Aeon J. Goodman (in the blue outfit). Tomais himself is in the yellow outfit.

---

Although I already know that Second Pride's claim to this being the organization's 10th anniversary is challenged by some, I choose to accept it. (Nota bene, in my response to a comment by my dear friend Garth Raleigh, I - after having reviewed what  Second Pride actually says - correct myself as to the organization claiming anything of the sort.)

In my mind Second Pride - and any other LGBT organization on the grid, that can show any connection between their existing organization and the ad hoc committees celebrating Pride in the early days of SecondLife, can make the same claim.

The 1920's Berlin Project - 6th Anniversary

Frau Jo Yardley is inviting us all to help celebrate the 6th anniversary of one of the best known and longest lasting projects in SecondLife, The 1920's Berlin Project.

I for one will drop by during the coming week and check it out again. I have been there before a few times and have always enjoyed the friendly atmosphere.

Besides, who knows whom you may stumble across when visiting and enjoying yourself there. It is well known that the venerable Frau Yardley has the attention of Ebbe Linden and probably lots of other important people and residents too.

Frau Yardley's dedication and hard work on this project should be an inspiration to us all on what can be - and has been - done in our wonderful world.
On May the 30th 2009 I opened the door to a little very basic, noob build bar and let the public in for the first time. The 1920's Berlin Project was born!
Only 3 months after joining Second Life, barely understanding how to glue prims together, I had started something that would soon grow into a vibrant active community of wonderful people.
And there is more to come… But first we need to celebrate the 6th (!) anniversary of our little neighborhood and we’re doing this by organizing 6 days of fun events and inviting everyone to come visit.
You can find 1920's Berlin by clicking this link: Berlin (SLurl)
We look forward to seeing lots of familiar but also new faces visiting us.
Prosit!
Jo Yardley

Tomais & I Celebrate Our 1st Anniversary

Shortly after the stroke of midnight (CET) my Tomais and I returned to Southern Charm to celebrate our first wedding (elopement) anniversary.

We danced together in The Aviary and invited my brother Dej to join us there. However, Dej told us he couldn't dance tonight because he was "wearing the wrong underwear", so he sat down to chaperon us instead.  (Let's see if you can figure out that comment.)

This would be a great opportunity to thank my husband for a wonderful year and tell him how happy I am that we have decided to continue together indefinitely.

I love you very much, my darling!

WOW! Paradise Lost in Second Life

My son Guyke gave Tomais and me an extremely early wedding anniversary present by inviting us to join him for the last performance of the Basilique Performing Arts Company in Second Life's production of John Milton's "Paradise Lost".

I took loads of pictures of this original, unique, sensational and totally amazing experience to the wonderful music of Mozart, but do not have time at the moment to blog them. Instead I will only give you a few pictures before and after the show.

Stay tuned for more pictures this coming weekend.

I give this production the score: ★ ★ ★ ★
I and Guyke ready to teleport to the venue
Waiting in line for the ban lines to be removed
Inside the venue, waiting for the performance to begin
Tomais and I saying good night after the show
Thank you so much for this wonderful present, Guykechen!
