The Emerald viewer has been my favorite way to access Second Life for a long time.
After the recent criminal activities on that viewers developement team, which you can read about on other blogs,("Tinas universum" or "Eddi Haskell´s Second Life"), the viewer was taken off the Linden Labs "Third-Party Viewer Directory" yesterday.
This means it is now against the TOS to access Second Life with the Emerald viewer If you do that anyway you can get into some major problems with Linden Lab and your account can get suspended (see the link below about Eddi´s experiences).
Hopefully my friend Eddi Haskell is correct in his assessment that the Emerald viewer probably will be quicky reinstated, but the recent events have caused me to lose all trust in the people involved with that viewer.
I hate changing to a new viewer, does that mean I am getting old already? (I am so NOT allowing comments on that - at least not if you agree!) I already tried the official viewer and hated it...
If I do not answer you in SL you know the reason, I am only trying to learn how to control my new viewer. Aaaaaaaaarrrrgggghhhhhhhh...

Bock, that Emerald is not on TPVD right now does NOT mean we will be banned!!
ReplyDelete"Linden Lab’s Third Party Viewer Directory is optional for third party viewers to apply for and join. It is not a requirement to be on the directory. What is a requirement however is that third party viewers respect the Third Party Viewer Policy" http://secondlife.com/corporate/tpv.php
Do you really think that Linden Labs can afford to ban 53% of the residents?? I know there are notecards spreading round in-worlds with those FALSE rumours about being banned...
I am using Emerald as usual :)

rultan
You may be correct, rultan! But I have completely lost faith in the way things have been handled by the Emerald team so far.
ReplyDeleteI didn´t uninstall it yet tho, as I am waiting to see what they are doing to insure against future "mistakes" and "shenanigans".
Hugs
I respect THAT, when you don't trust the team you shall not use Emerald.
ReplyDeleteI think the team will and already are working on that things like these won't happen again. Now I hope they can work in peace and make a new version :)
Hugs
wont get off emerald till LL says i cant use it i believe in them and im NOT panicing like most seemt to be:) we all know ppl who dont get along with others say things that arent exactly 100% right...go figure;) you ARE safe with emerald bock ..pöss
ReplyDeleteI don´t like the thought of my computer being used in someone else´s illegal activities in the way that it´s been reported to have been used.
ReplyDeleteThe most upsetting to me was the managements nonchalant way in dealing with this when it was revealed. They called it "mistakes" and "shenanigans" and attempted to explain away and minimize what had in fact happened.
That is a sure sign that something has gone really wrong in the corporate culture.
OK I hate changing viewer too but I have been running junior on emerald as a test. One point you have to bear in mind is that its not 'corporate culture' in its usual sense really just drama and infighting between a group of devs who wanted to have some fun/be pooheads (not defining those as I would get drummed out of the brownies) that escalated.
ReplyDeleteThe viewer itself posed no real danger to us, the user, as it was targetted at one specific entity. I know that its shaken peoples trust and rightly so - come on people its not sweetness and light on the web so update your antivirus, check your firewall, change your virtual undies etc and do all the normal things you always know you should.
As for the attack itself it was so laughably inept in terms of tracing that (a) it was done by an idiot (b) it was designed to deliberately discredit MS (c) it was a secret LL plot (a bit too organised for that but you have to hint at them anyway as its the unwritten rule of blogging) or (d) it was a marvelous missed opportunity to cause some real trickster naughtiness. ie to make an old hacker like me weep. Best to disregard that last one.
Relax buddys and budettes the sky did not fall quite yet so party on. And I promise it won't fall until at least I have had another coffee.
