France bans burquas

The French Senate voted 246 to 1 (the Socialist, Communist, and Green party members abstained from voting) on Tuesday in favor of the bill, which has already passed in the lower chamber, the National Assembly. It will need President Nicolas Sarkozy's signature.

Legislative leaders in the Senate and the National Assembly said they wanted the Constitutional Council to examine it. They said in a joint statement that they want to be certain there is "no uncertainty" about it conforming to the constitution.

France's legislature is the first to vote on such a law, but similar measures are proposed in several other Western European countries.

The reactionaries attack has started against the weekest amongst us, when will it reach you and your chosen way of life?

Let me make it totally clear, I am not at all in favour of women covering themselves up in this extreme way, but I totally support their right to do so if they choose it themselves and it doesn´t interfere with  anyone else´s liberty, health or safety.

What will be banned next? I am hoping for bicycle pants!

  2. I agree with the first sentence, Vanadis.

But do you think that is a good excuse for banning burquas? ...and more interesting, do you think that is the (real) reason for the ban? Because I sure as hell don´t!
