Simmering Down at The Whim

Yesterday I was frustrated about some problems I had with my viewer and some other shit. However, I decided to drop in at my buddy Butch Diavolo´s new club Whim (SLurl), on Tuesdays there is a regular four hour set of the best trance DJ´s in SecondLife.

Arcangelo "DJ Arcy" Hellman managed to cool me down and in a matter of two hours I was feeling mellow, sleepy and cool.

Good Ending

"All´s well that ends well", it is said and there is no better way to end a weekend than listening to the tunes of Arcangelo Hellman at The Sanctuary while dancing with a hot builder (in this case my mate Chade Dagger).

Random Thoughts

Chaos (et ordre) Lionel Allorge, 2006
When I got in-world yesterday I was in a splendid mood. It had been a good day and I knew what I was going to do and where I was going to go, even if I was going alone.

So there I was, the Much Honored Bock McMillan, laird of Southern Charm and prince of Cascade Falls with my Saturday evening and early night planned with the most exciting and amazing events.

And all my well laid plans came crashing down right at the start because the first event didn't start when it was supposed to. It was a release party for a new Swedish Techno album that was announced to start at 1 PM SLT at a certain place. I tried going there about three minutes into the party and first got the message that the sim was full, when I tried again ten minutes later there wasn't a single soul, not even the artist himself. It infuriated me so much that I deleted the blog post I had made about the event yesterday

I am sorry to say, but I am rather anal about keeping appointments and if there is a cock-up or a change that this be announced to the interested parties in a timely fashion. (Hell, I still haven´t forgiven my dear buddy Bara Jonson for not turning up at his own bloody bachelor party four years ago - which I was hosting - leaving me alone at that event with three "working women" and a pimp/club owner. My Ars never laughed at me so much as that time, after he had made me simmer down.)

Well, it seems my bosom buddy Apmel Goosson made it to the event together with Kandinsky Beaumont and they had a fabulous time as he tells us on his blogpost about it today, Min avatar heter Apmel; Tack Bock

When I complained my misery in the Swedish group chat - hoping to attract attention from the artist himself or someone who was at the party - I instead got pounced on by a two week old noob who started telling me they had probably known I was coming and moved the party to avoid me.

It is rather unusual for noobs to be sassy with the laird, but I still did not make the connection at first. Not until she kept repeating herself and going on about it did I add two and two together and come up with the right conclusion by combining her rudeness with her chosen name. The name is inspired by Viking tradition and she is of course a quintuplet/cousin/friend of the infamous mudslinger.

Luckily my evening ended well anyway, because Butch Diavolo was there to save my bacon and teleport me to Arcangelo Hellman´s set at The Sanctuary. What are friends for if they cannot give you a pity-TP, huh?

Weekend Distraction

DJ Arcy, Arcangelo Hellman, gives us another therapy session, #18 (Tech Trance Special). You can find more of DJ Arcy´s music here Soundcloud - DJ Arcy

This session could not have come at a better time for me because I need some distraction after having read my bosom buddy Apmel´s latest post.

I am breathing, breathing and breathing. In and out, in and out, in deep and long breaths to keep my composure after reading his revealing post My Avatar´s Name Is Apmel: "Cowardly Attack On Bock" (in Swedish).

DJ Arcy at The Sanctuary

DJ Arc in the booth with his hot bodyguards in front
Just as my usual Friday night coma was about to set in I got the call from The Sanctuary club that Arcangelo Hellman (DJ Arcy), was about to start his set. I have always liked his music so I decided to go over for a while.

The Sanctuary is a deconsecrated church building (or perhaps it was never consecrated) and a is a beautiful venue with stained glass church windows.

Although the trance music was great and the company pleasant my sleep deprivation finally caught up with me after an hour and I had to leave.

What Makes A Good DJ?

Bock looking at Ars

I have spent most of my second life hanging around with - and surrounded by - some of the best DJ´s in SecondLife; Ars, Andrey, Sarco, Harley, Martial, Yannis, Zno and the rest of the Sarco Sound (link not active) crew and many of their DJ friends.

Over the last year I have mainly stayed in the Swedish clubs in SecondLife and there are some good DJ´s here too, the first names that pop up in my head are Frost, Lucien and sirhc, at Erotes I enjoy the music of Butch Diavolo and Arc - but I am not making a list so if you don´t find your name here don´t be sad.

My Ars used to say "Everyone thinks they are a DJ in SecondLife" by which he meant that playing records isn't all there is to it. Now first listen to what a real DJ can do, just lean back and enjoy. This remix was made by DJ Markus Schulz.

I found this summary on What Makes A Good Club DJ? by ElGringoSalsero;
Each year, DJ Magazine publishes its list of the top 100 DJ's based upon public votes. I would consider the top ten identified DJ's to be reliable experts on what it takes to be a good DJ. Here's what they have to say on the subject:

#1 Armin Van Buuren - "Timing and character."
#2 Tiësto - "A great DJ can adjust to the crowd, make them go crazy but still be able to do his own thing."
#3 David Guetta - "A great crowd."
#4 Above & Beyond - "Good taste in music, an open mind and experience."
#5 Paul Van Dyk - "The confidence of knowing what your own sound is. And not being a snobby ass and playing for yourself."
#6 Deadmau5 - "Their taste in music. It's a little bit of technical know-how, but 90% of it is the music you play."

#7 Ferry Corsten - "Knowing how to entertain the crowd. You're not there to educate. You should present new music without forcing it down people's throats."
#8 Markus Schulz - "Unique style and understanding of the momentum in the room."
#9 Gareth Emery - "Knowing the crowd is a fundamental requirement and looking like you're enjoying it."
#10 Sander Van Doorn - "A lot of interaction with the crowd. Playing a set is about educating on one hand, but also playing music that the people are there for."
---

My own two cents on this subject, from my perspective as part of the crowd:
1. Be prepared, for Gods sake plan your set! Adapt the music you choose to the event that is planned and the crowd you expect to be there. Always make sure you have enough music to go overtime if something should happen that requires it and enough to adapt your set if it should be needed.
2. Be aware of the crowd and work with it (it´s not a wanking session after all). Being arrogant and snotty is a definite no-no, you are there to entertain not to be a condescending s.o.b. This also means do not badmouth any other DJ´s, words spread.
3. By all means take requests if you wish to do so. It isn't necessary to play the requests straight away. play it later if it fits better there and if it doesn't fit tell them.
4. If you don´t have charisma or a personality don´t bother!
5. Most important of all be true to yourself; If you don´t like the music, don´t play it!

The technical stuff can all be learned as you go along.

Nakna avatarer i SL 71

I really love these two guys! They are my dear friends Chade Dagger and his partner Ronan Juran.

Chade is the owner of the awesome Hinterland sims in SL, all beautifully designed in a Scottish theme. If you have a chance please go there and take a look around and perhaps make a home for yourself.

The Hinterland-group is one of the sweetest and most caring groups of men in all of SL. Some of you may have met Chade and Ronan before either at their club Club Erotes or perhaps even at St Magnus Kirk where the wonderful Hinterlandmen arranged the first Memorial Service for my Ars just two days after he passed away.

You may remember my Ars used to have a regular set at "The Den" every weekend called "The Nightshift". I am happy to tell you that these parties have started up again, now with the great DJ Arc. I know that my Ars would have supported this wholeheartedly.
