Sansar Beta Opens to the Public

Today I was told that Sansar had been opened for the general inquisitive public, so I of course had to try it out.

I managed to successfully create an account and then logged in. I took a long while until everything was in place and I found myself standing on top of people three-deep. More than I had gotten the idea to try it out it would seem.
Bock at the Zen Garden in Sansar
One important thing to remember is that this game is primarily intended for those with an Occulus setup. They get more information on the screen and can do things you cannot do without the Occulus. I couldn't do mush once I was logged in and had managed to extricate myself from the others enough so I could move around. There was a great deal of lag too,

I could talk, but I couldn't see the names of anyone of those around me so I didn't know if I knew then. At another place ("experience") named 114 (something) created by Draxtor, I listened in to a conversation between a Linden representative and a woman and as far as I understand the launch of the beta had been successful with only a few minor glitches.

As far as I understand there are - at least as yet - no intention of connecting the two worlds, except possibly through Marketplace. So two worlds, two accounts.

Later I was contacted by a friendly guy named Colt, who said he recognized my name from SecondLife. So we had a nice chat. After a while I felt really tired of being back to 2007 and feeling like a noob - although I can see there is a great potential - so I logged. We'll see how much and how often I visit again, maybe this is something directed mainly at the very young gamers. I am not a gamer, I am a venerable, old, resident.

Thank You, Board & Volunteers of Second Pride 2017

The fountain and the globe
I have just finished reading LLedge Eames closing statement for the 2017 Second Pride Festival. It begins like this (For the complete statement please go to The Second Pride website (url)):
"Thank you for an amazing 2017 Second Pride Festival!
As the sun sets on yet another wildly successful and my last Second Pride Festival season. I’d like to take a moment to say some thank yous. I am so grateful for this years outpouring of participation not to mention I had the pleasure of working with some of the most amazing talents from across the grid.
Our 2016 – 2017 Second Pride Board. Jak Calcutt with his outstanding builds and designs, creating a feast for our eyes, Marge Beaumont for her behind the scenes accounting, Tootsie Nootan and her security team (Levi & Kit) keeping us all safe, and Viktor Sandman for all his patience scheduling and wrangling our performers. To our volunteers. Kahvy & Garrett Smith for undertaking and creating some fantastic social media buzz along with all those bloggers. Lee McKay and his webmaster skills that put us back online."
The shopping mall
After thanking the sponsors, vendors, performers and others that contributed to making this one of the best festivals ever, he goes on to thank the attendants and then finishes
"On more than one occasion I was greeted by complete strangers and then thanked for providing them with such a true and wonderful pride experience. It was comments like that and many more that told me we had hit our mark. I can’t begin to thank this team enough. You ALL really outdid yourself and should be proud of all you accomplished.
As I mentioned earlier this is my last year as Chairman. It has been such an honor to be involved in this organization. As much as I am ready to step down, I will miss it and all the nuances. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to bring my hope and joy to you all through this wonderful outlet."
The Japanese Garden, a permanent exhibition
Well, I would in turn like to thank the board of Second Pride for - yet another - amazing and enjoyable festival. This Second Pride festival is up there among my top three all-time favorites since I first started going to Pride in SecondLife in 2008.

I can hardly imagine all the hard work and dedication our board and the volunteers put in to this venture - and all the work they did the rest of the year - for the LGBT+ community in Second Life.

It is even harder for me to understand why the boards dedicated work throughout the year has sometimes been met by criticism by fringes of the community, especially those who do not lift a finger or support the efforts in any way whatsoever.
The memorial chapel
Second Pride must exist first and foremost for the LGBT+ residents in SecondLife, to be an inworld presence, to offer support to other smaller LGBT+ organizations, and to represent our community to the surrounding community and to Linden Lab. All else must, in my not so humble opinion, be secondary to that.

I am saddened that the present board say they doesn't wish to continue, although I do understand their position. Hopefully some of them can be persuaded to continue, or at to return after some rest and relaxation from these responsibilities.

My deepest gratitude, again, goes to the board of 2016-2017 for a job well done!
The main stage
All the pictures in this post show the wonderful work that Build Director Jak Calcutt did for this years festival-venue. I have them in a folder named "The sim that Jak built".

LLedge Eames: "Why I'm Passionate About Second Pride"

LLedge Eames is the chair of Second Pride. This statement was posted on Facebook today.

I am completely in support of all that LLedge has to say on the reasons we have - indeed why we need - Second Pride in SecondLife and wish to share it with you all.

---
LLedge Eames, Chair of Second Pride
"So the Second Pride Festival is almost over, and what a ride it is has been. The festival is already well on it's way to become one of the most legendary seasons of Pride yet.

With amazing DJ's and Hosts coordinated by Viktor Sandman our Event Director, Content creators from the A-list, volunteers Kahvy & Garret Smith wrangling social media, Lee Mckay's website designing, Tootsie Nootan our Security chair and her team (Levi & Kit) keeping the festival safe and so many sponsors helping, this Pride Festival could be nothing other than a great success!

As donations are poring in I want to take a moment to talk about pride, and about the money involved in second pride as well.

I myself and the members of my board team have donated many beautiful party decorations to the Festival to make it amazing and Jak Calcutt our Building Director really outdid himself! T L C Home Collection donated a lot of new animals to the Japanese strolling garden, and many others have helped make this years festival amazing!

Yet, many ask me: Why Second Pride? Why donate?

I've recently read a blog by one of Pride's Bloggers, Bailey Saxmundham. Being Transgender, who better to ask?

"People ask "Why Pride?". There have been so many advances over the years since the Stonewall Riots in 1969, but there is still a way to go. Some of the advances have been overturned.

Pride isn't about parties - it is about visibility and solidarity. It is about community and belonging. It is about not giving in and not giving up."

http://baileysaxmundham.blogspot.nl/2017/06/pride.html

And that hits it right on the mark for me. It's not about the parties. It's not about the honor and glory of those that shine on the stage, or those that didn't make it to the schedule this year. It's about coming together and forming a front. It is about not giving in and not giving up. About providing a place in SecondLife where we can be safe. Safe to be ourselves, all year round! A place to come back to when the going gets a little tough. A place to relax in the park or to remember in the memorial. And yes, a place to party and celebrate!

Some say, Pride is commercialized. But in reality, those sponsors and vendors show their own pride the best way they can: by bringing their business. By saying, we don't care about the haters, we are rising above. Buy my Pride? PLEASE do!!!

Because with that money, we can have this sim. This place in this virtual world called Second Pride. Not just during pride week, no, all year round! We are featured in the SecondLife destination guide and have had Lindens visit our festival. We will work with Linden Lab to list our sim as a permanent gay destination after the festival. That is where the money goes first of all: that place we can call Home. And we are proud of it, and of everyone donating their time and funds into this. Second Pride is owned by the community, and paid for by the community. And that, is a beautiful thing.

And the surplus? The Human Rights Campaign, Lambda Legal, Rainbow Roads, they all benefit. Second Pride is working with the Madonna show on a huge 4 hour benefit for Rainbow Roads this coming July 22. Also there's the nonprofit charities that we have given space on the sim: UCC SL, TAVA (Transgender American Veterans Association) TRC (Transgender Resource Center), and SOS (survivors of suicide / depression support project). New this year for the festival we invited the Care and Hope Center (awareness and support for victims of domestic violence)

Yes, there are many ways to support the community in the real world as well. But not everyone is able to participate in the real world, the same way they can in SecondLife.

At Second Pride, we can be who we want to be. In whatever shape or form. We can help, reach out, come together and make sure none of us gives in, or gives up. And that, makes me PROUD!

Happy Pride Everyone!

LL Launches Preview of Sansar This Summer (Update)

Linden Lab has announced that it is going to let skilled content creators to be among the first to preview and work in Sansar. The preview version is - after some delay - to be launched during the summer of 2017.
Sansar is supposedly an improved and much more advanced version of SecondLife and is said to be based on a completely new and powerful platform.

For more information please visit: www.sansar.com.

Those of us that aren't skilled content creators can meanwhile enjoy the official preview video from YouTube.

Update
This is a comment from Lee McKay on Google+. I think it is very informative and would like to share it with you.
A couple things to note about Sansar:
1) There is no connected world like with Second Life. It's all separate "experiences". You can only log into one "experience" at a time. So for example, you want to go to a club or community, you log into that specific thing. If you want to go somewhere else, you log out and back into the other place, or at least back to a menu. Don't look for "world map" or teleporting from place to place. It's not there.
2) Experiences can be instanced. So you might go to your favorite club, but be in a different "instance" of that club than your friends, and therefore you won't even see them there. You wouldn't even see the DJ or staff if they aren't in the same instance as you. Certainly this gets around the user limits, but spoils much of the reason for being there in the first place.
3) Sansar is "usable" on a computer and monitor, but is aimed at VR gear and headsets. Most of us SL'ers will probably never have the stuff to use it properly.
Even by Linden's own admission, it isn't mean to be Second Life 2.0. It's something else entirely, aimed more at the younger generation of gamers. It operates more like the things they are used to.
Update 2
Lee McKay+Bock McMillan And not meant to be negative in any way. I'm sure Sansar will be a fun experience for those that it will appeal to. I'm just not sure that will be us old time SL'ers. :)
Bock McMillan Not to worry, +Lee McKay it didn't come off as negative at all, just constructive information

Linden Lab: "Love Is Love, Is Love, Is Love"

Yesterday I got a heads-up from my dear old friend Ebbe, to keep an eye open for some exciting new developments that would be launched today. And my is it a whopper!
In an exciting and thrilling announcement today on the official SecondLife blog we can read that Linden Lab has - finally - decided to depart from it's Judeo-Christian roots and accept all love for what it is and allow residents who choose to do so to formalize it by entering into recorded partnerships.

Hitherto it has only been possible to partner with one other resident, regardless of gender, from this day onward we will be able to enter into multiple partnerships.

However, there are two restrictions
  1. No more than ten residents can be in one partnership at this time (the numbers may - or may not - be amended in the future to a larger or a smaller number.)
  2. If a resident is already in a partnership the presumptive new partnership must  also be accepted by all the previous partners on both sides for the partnership to be recorded and official.
---
It really was high time for Linden Lab to allow poly-amorous relationships in SecondLife. We all know of existing love triangles or even menage-a-quatre, cinc, six, sept, huit, neuf and dix.

Ever since I read the news I have been thinking of if and with whom I would want to extend my marriage with. I will keep you updated on my thoughts on this.

Hip Hip Hooray, It's My 10th Rezday Today!

How time flies! It amazes me to think that today I am celebrating my tenth anniversary in our wonderful world of SecondLife.
Bock 2017 by Richard De Grataine Suoh
It's been a wonderful and amazing journey and I wouldn't wish to be without it. In those days we were born ugly and we stayed ugly. We duckwalked and had our clothes plastered to our bodies. Some days we would crash 45-50 times a day and still we would soldier on through those bad days and log right back in again. After each teleport you had to check yourself, so that you hadn't ended up with your shoe sunk into your ass or your hair stuck to your groin.

But we sure did have fun, even when we and watched the number of logged in residents getting close to first 5,000 holding our breath and waiting for SecondLife to crash. Then that number rose to 10,000, 20,000 until we no longer thought about it.
Bock 2007 by Bock McMillan
Life improved gradually - and at times very fast - but most of the time there was some improvement that gave us all hope and energy. Well except for under the reign of M Linden, those years were a total waste and we were all rather despondent until Philip Linden took the reins again. At the moment we are experiencing another golden age with great improvements under the benevolent rule of Ebbe Linden.

I am going to stick around for a couple of years more to see where this whole exciting adventure ends. It's going to be a thrill!

Linden Lab on Trump's Ban on Immigration

Statement issued by Linden Lab on Trump's Executive Order on Immigration 2017-02-02 00:00:00 UTC

"We at Linden Lab are extremely disappointed in and adamantly opposed to Trump’s recent executive order on immigration. We reject racism, intolerance, and xenophobia.

We are proud to include immigrants among our leadership, colleagues, and customers, as well as our families, friends, and communities. We value diversity, compassion, and understanding, and we are proud that our products enable people to come together and form meaningful connections regardless of differences in their offline lives.

Trump’s order is counter to what we value and antithetical to American ideals. We join the many voices calling on the US government to remove this restriction as quickly as possible and to refrain from imposing additional barriers that threaten opportunities for immigrants, under-represented minorities, and women."

You make me proud guys!

My Husband - New, Improved & Updated

"Tomais" by Tomais Ashdene
It's amazing really, how we as residents of SecondLife can update our appearances with the latest developments by Linden Lab and the content creators.

Following the introduction of mesh a few years ago, most of us got new mesh bodies and some even got mesh heads.

After the launch of Bento recently, my Tomais and I waited eagerly for the release of the Bento enabled Catwa head.

Although Tomais has been playing around with other mesh heads, I was still skeptical and holding back. (I'm not as willing as others to change my appearances radically.)

The picture shows my husband's new look with the Catwa head. Not that he wasn't good looking before, but now he is definitely both divine and mouthwatering!

2016

I will not miss you, 2016, you were a horrendous and worthless year with only a few redeeming qualities.
I will not delve into all shit you caused, but I will drop a few names. Donald J. Trump, Vladimir "Little Father" Putin, Bashar Al-Assad, Julian Assange and, last but not least, Aleppo.

Among the few redeeming factors were Tomais, Dej, JJ, Pook, Kevin (previously known as Knox) and the Smith Boys, Kahvy and Garrett. I must also add Ebbe Linden and Bento and the welcome extra prims.

Let us all hope - and join forces - to fight for a better 2017!

Dem Bones, Dem Bones!

In the 3rd year of the almighty, wonderful and charming Ebbe Altberg (a k a Ebbe Linden), CEO of Linden Lab, the creative gods at the lab have - in close cooperation and collaboration with SecondLife content creators - achieved the revolutionary Bento Skeleton.

Both Linden Lab and Firestorm have now released viewers that are Bento compatible.

Bento is an extension of the SecondLife avatar skeleton whereby we get dozens of new bones to support rigging and animation and new attachment points.
The new skeleton, which is compatible with existing avatars, rigging and animation, gives creators the power to build more sophisticated avatars than ever before. The skeleton extensions include:
  • 11 extra limb bones for wings, additional arms, or extra legs.
  • 6 tail bones
  • 30 bones in the hands (all 10 fingers!)
  • 30 bones for facial expressions
  • 2 other new bones in the head for animating ears or antennae
  • 13 new attachment points associated with the new bones
What all this means is simply that our wonderful SecondLife content creators have gotten more and better tools to make things look, move and appear better and a greater range of customization to your own preferences and individuality.

SP Election 2016 Schedule and More

This is from a notecard sent by Viktor Sandman in the Second Pride Festival group and concerns the upcoming election of members to the board of Second Pride. (I have edited it only slightly for various reasons, hence there are no quotation marks except on the first part.) The process has been somewhat delayed by the server crash of the Second Pride-website.

"It is time for our annual elections to fill vacant positions in the Second pride board of directors. We are also seeking volunteers to serve on the election committee.

Please read the attached notecard and follow the information given if you are interested in volunteering, or if you would like to run for one of the open seats on the board.

Thank you for your interest,

Seco"

Grandfathered

Our friends at Linden Lab recently offered those of us who rent sims from them a price reduction of the maintenance fees (a.k.a. tier).

According to the offer we can now "buy down" from a monthly tier of $295 to $195 with a one time payment of $600 before October 4th, 2016.

Today I have decided to avail myself of that generous offer and have submitted a ticket accordingly. As I am a resident of the European Union I will thereby reduce my monthly cost for Southern Charm by $125, due to the added benefit of a lower VAT surcharge.

Read the full offer from Linden Lab here: Want Lower Tier? Now You Can Get Grandfathered Land Rates!

A Match Made In the SL-Heavens

Oh my, have I got news for you all! It is so exciting I can hardly contain myself, filled with jubilation and excitement as I am.

At the editorial meeting today I met with The Much Honored Bock McMillan, laird of Southern Charm etc, etc, at his mansion (a.k.a. "Gossip Central" due to the always well informed laird's highly dependable sources).

The laird had a particular bit of thrilling information to impart today, "directly from the two involved horses mouths" as he chose to phrase it.

Please sit down and breathe deeply three times before reading any further. This blog cannot be held accountable for any damages you may incur while reading this post!

OK, here goes!

His lairdship informed us that my Philip (a.k.a. Philip Linden in SecondLife or Philip Rosedale in first life) and my Ebbe (a.k.a. Ebbe Linden in SecondLife and Ebbe Altberg in first life) are romantically involved. So what we all thought was merely a bromance between our wonderful dreamer/creator and the best damned C.E.O. of Linden Labs we've ever had has evolved into a deep love between the two.

The guys have decided to move in together with both of their first life families as well. For that purpose a large mansion (sixteen bedrooms with ensuite baths) has been bought outside San Francisco for them and their families.

It is reported that both the wives and the families on either side get along famously with each other and are all for this somewhat unusual arrangement.

This is a marvelous - albeit unforeseen - development for SecondLife and all it's residents. Let us rejoice with the happy couple and their families!

The BMcM Corporation Diversifies

Prince Duncan Aycliffe McMillan, CFO of The BMcM Corporation, recently presented a report to the board of directors in which he concluded that the best return per Linden Dollar could be found on investments in the industries of munitions, drugs, crime or sex. Due to legal ramifications in the first three industries the board decided that the company should focus on the sex industry, particularly the production of pornografic material of the highest quality and with intellectual superiority.

To fulfill this aim the board constructed WellHung Studios Ltd (A part of the BMcM Corporation). The company started the production of its first motion picture on Friday. The working title of the production is "The Pizza Boy; He delivers - 2015".
According to the director Mr. Dejerrity Mycron, the film is a film about the making of the well known classic with the same name.

The cast is absolutely stellar with the participation of, among others,
JJ Goodman (formerly of BelAmi) as "The Ravenous Pizza Customer"
Lee McKay (formerly of Falcon Studios) as "The Wayward Pizza Boy",
Static Frenzy (formerly of Titan Men) as "The Boom-Boom Boy" and
Tomais Ashdene (formerly of Treasure Island Media) as "The Camera Man".

The Much Honored Bock McMillan appears in a cameo role as "The Director".

The movie is expected to premiere worldwide in March 2016.

Mitzi's Dilemma

Sorry but this post turned out longer than I had wished, but I hope you will consider reading it and responding anyhow.
A moral dilemma is a situation where:
1) You are presented with two or more actions, all of which you have the ability to perform.
2) There are moral reasons for you to choose each of the actions.
3) You cannot perform all of the actions and have to choose which action (or actions when there are three or more choices) to perform.
---
The background
SecondLife is an immersive 3D virtual reality world that is owned and operated by Linden Lab. In this world people can create one - or more accounts. Once the accounts have been created they can be logged in-world as residents.

The residents can interact with each other in almost every conceivable way and through more than two but less than three of their five senses (the full exceptions being smelling and tasting, whereas "touching" can sort-of be achieved).

However, apart from breaches of the Terms of Service (ToS) for SecondLife (which all residents have to accept on login) Linden Lab is not a party to and cannot resolve disputes between residents. There are no laws and no judicial system to solve disputes between residents, other than their own personal ethics and morals.

Introduction of the participants
Mitzi and Barbie have both been residents in SecondLife for eight years. They are acquainted with each other, but have never really had much to do with one another except some friendly interaction at social events.

Mitzi has chosen a life on the sidelines which is mainly concerned with her lover, her family and her friends. Alongside that Mitzi has a passion for gardening and landscaping and is a member of an in-world garden society, "The SecondGarden". Mitzi has a blog where she gives an account of her life and experiences.

Barbie, on the other hand, is a high profiled business woman and entrepreneur and has been involved in a land owning company and many major events and business ventures. She is a well known and respected woman. Barbie also has a blog where she promotes her events and ventures and recounts her life and experiences,

The deal
SecondGarden annually hosts a huge inworld event for it's membership and everyone else who may be interested in participating. Due to the size of the event the society needs more than it's regular sim to organize the event.

At a late date Mitzi learns that the society is having problems acquiring support from it's previous supporters for the use of an additional sim and offers to step in. She starts looking into the problem, but as it all is a strange and new territory for her and time is short. Mitzi therefor comes to think of Barbie, whom she believes must be familiar with similar issues through her previous business and large scale events.

Mitzi and Barbie have an amicable chat and Barbie agrees to help in renting a sim for the soon upcoming event. They agree on the following:
1. The sim is to be rented for six (6) weeks at L$19,000 per week (4 weeks before the event, 1 week for the event and 1 week for cleanup)
2. The cost of moving the sim prior to and after the event, L$37,500 (both ways).
3. The sim to be delivered as soon as possible. (Barbie assures Mitzi that this should only take a few days.)
Mitzi pays Barbie the full costs of the arrangement, L$151,500, and thanks her profusely for her kind assistance in the matter.

Ensuing events
The sim is not delivered to SecondGarden until some 10-12 days later. This doesn't bother Mitzi too much as she believes that it could be due to some mess up in communications and actions for which Barbie is not solely responsible.

On the last day of the event Mitzi wakes up to find a barrage of emails informing her that the sim she has rented through Barbies kind assistance has been closed and no one can get in. Mitzi tries to get in contact with Barbie to have the issue solved, both on social media and inworld without success.

When nothing is heard from Barbie during several hours, Mitzi instead contacts the land owning company directly and asks for information about how she can solve the problem.

The company informs her that the rent for the last six days have not been paid (nor for the clean up week). When Mitzi asks if she can solve the issue by paying the arrears (the back rent) and for the coming week on behalf of Barbie, the company kindly acquiesced to let her do so. The sim was opened again immediately afterwards and the closing ceremonies could continue as planned.

When paying the arrears and for the coming week Mitzi sees that the cost is not L$19,000 a week, but L$17,777. This in itself doesn't bother Mitzi as she assumes that Barbie has gotten a better deal than the going rate due to her previous dealings with the company.

However, Mitzi doesn't feel that it is fair that she should pay for the two weeks twice and asks Barbie to reimburse her for the additional costs of L$35,554.

No reimbursement has been made and Barbie no longer responds to messages from Mitzi on social media or inworld.

The dilemma
Mitzi feels she has two choices in the current situation.
1. To forget all about it and go on with her happy life and avoiding all future contact or dealings with Barbie, after all the amount is really not that substantial and it is mostly her own fault for not having protected her interests better.
2. To write about the incident on her blog and name Barbies name, show the proofs she has collected for her case (transaction records, chat logs etc.) and warn everyone from future business with Barbie, after all the amount is not insignificant and Barbies actions show poor business ethics.

What do you think Mitzi should do and why?
Please leave your thoughts in the comments.

SL12B Begins Today!

And right in the middle of the ongoing celebration of the 10th anniversary of Pride in SecondLife the community also gets to celebrate the 12th Birthday of our wonderful Second Life.
I will of course go to take a peek at this celebration also, if nothing else but to show my gratitude to my darling Philip Linden (a.k.a. Philip Rosedale) and his team of superbly clever, imaginative, skillful and loveable nerds, geeks and dorks, i.e. Linden Lab.

Thank you, for giving us this world to live in!

For more information about this event I direct you to my friend Ricco Saenz blog Second Sighting: Celebrating dreams at SL’s 12th Anniversary and of course the event website SL Community Celebration
